Kalahari Wildlife Photo Expedition
South Africa | October 2027
12 Days of Exclusive Wildlife Photography in the Heart of the Kalahari
An extraordinary photographic adventure. An exclusive private reserve. Just six photographers per session.
Discover the wild beauty of South Africa's Kalahari on an unforgettable 12-day wildlife photography expedition designed for photographers who want more than a traditional safari.
Join professional wildlife photographers Hector Astorga and Calvin Kotze for an exclusive photographic experience at Khamab Kalahari Private Game Reserve, where spectacular wildlife, breathtaking landscapes, and incredible photographic opportunities await.
With two separate sessions, each limited to just six photographers, this expedition offers an intimate, personalized experience with exceptional access to one of South Africa's remarkable wilderness areas.
This is not simply a safari. This is a wildlife photography expedition designed by photographers, for photographers.
An Entire Reserve. Just for Our Small Group.
Imagine exploring a vast private Kalahari reserve without competing with dozens of safari vehicles for the perfect photographic position.
Our expedition takes place at Khamab Private Game Reserve, a spectacular wilderness destination encompassing expansive Kalahari landscapes, diverse habitats, and an impressive variety of African wildlife.
Our small group enjoys exclusive access to the reserve during the expedition, allowing us the freedom and flexibility to concentrate on photography rather than follow the rigid schedules of a traditional safari.
We can spend time working with interesting subjects, explore different compositions, take advantage of changing light, and patiently wait for those special moments that make extraordinary wildlife photographs.
With only six photographers per session, everyone has the space, attention, and opportunity to make the most of every encounter.
Wildlife Photography in the Kalahari
The Kalahari offers a photographic environment unlike any other in Africa.
Its open landscapes, distinctive red earth, golden grasses, and dramatic skies provide beautiful backgrounds for wildlife photography. The region's extraordinary light, especially during the early morning and late afternoon, creates wonderful opportunities for both intimate wildlife portraits and environmental images.
Our goal is not simply to photograph as many animals as possible. We want to create compelling photographs that capture behavior, tell stories, and convey the character of this remarkable wilderness.
Whether photographing predators, antelope, birds, or the smaller inhabitants of the Kalahari, we will focus on making every photographic opportunity count.
Professional Photography Hide
One of the highlights of this expedition is access to a professional wildlife photography hide.
Photographing from a dedicated hide offers a completely different perspective from traditional vehicle-based safaris.
The carefully positioned hide provides opportunities to photograph wildlife from a low perspective, often creating beautiful backgrounds, intimate compositions, and striking eye-level encounters.
Hide photography also allows us to concentrate on animal behavior, experiment with creative techniques, and work patiently with subjects in a controlled photographic environment.
For photographers who appreciate the importance of perspective, light, and background, this will be an especially exciting part of the expedition.
Two Professional Photographers. Personalized Instruction.
This expedition will be led by Hector Astorga and Calvin Kotze, two experienced wildlife photographers who share a passion for creating exceptional images and helping others improve their photography.
With only six participants and two photography instructors, our photographer-to-instructor ratio is an exceptional 3:1.
Our approach emphasizes individual attention and hands-on instruction throughout the expedition.
We will work on:
Understanding and anticipating wildlife behavior
Creating stronger compositions and cleaner backgrounds
Making the most of natural light
Capturing action and dynamic wildlife behavior
Choosing the right lenses and camera settings for each opportunity
Exploring creative photographic techniques
Developing a more thoughtful approach to wildlife photography
Whether you are an experienced wildlife photographer or looking to take your photography to the next level, our goal is to help you return home with outstanding images and a stronger understanding of your craft.
Beyond the Field: Image Processing and Instruction
Great wildlife photography doesn't end when we put our cameras away.
During the middle of the day, when the light is less favorable for photography, we will dedicate time to image review, photographic discussions, and post-processing instruction.
Hector and Calvin will share their approaches to selecting, developing, and refining wildlife images using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.
These sessions provide an opportunity to review photographs from our outings, discuss creative decisions, and learn techniques that can dramatically improve the final result.
Our philosophy is simple: We want you to return home not only with memorable photographs but also as a better photographer.
Comfortable Accommodations in the Wilderness
During our expedition, we will stay at Penne and Kamako Lodges, providing comfortable accommodations in the beautiful surroundings of the Khamab Reserve.
After exciting mornings and afternoons in the field, enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the lodges, share photographic experiences with fellow participants, and prepare for another day of exploring the Kalahari.
The combination of exceptional wildlife photography, comfortable lodging, and a small group of like-minded photographers makes this expedition a truly special experience.
